OpenEvidence and Northwestern Medicine Launch Collaboration to Integrate Clinical Evidence into the EHR
Miami, FL and Chicago, IL – Northwestern Medicine, Chicago’s premier integrated academic health system, and OpenEvidence, a leading AI-powered medical search and clinical decision-support platform, today announced a collaboration to embed OpenEvidence directly within the electronic health record (EHR).
“At OpenEvidence, our mission is to build tools that are clinically meaningful, rigorously validated, and seamlessly integrated into existing workflows,” said Ania Bilski, MD, Vice President Clinical AI at OpenEvidence. “Embedding OpenEvidence within Northwestern Medicine’s EHR delivers real-time, evidence-based insights without adding complexity.”
This enterprise-wide deployment marks the first phase of a broader collaboration focused on ensuring AI is used safely and effectively at the bedside. Beginning October 8, Northwestern Medicine clinicians can launch OpenEvidence directly from Epic, signed in automatically with their existing hospital credentials. For the first time, nurses, pharmacists and other clinical staff will also have access, giving the full care team a fast way to check medication dosing and drug interactions, review the latest guidelines, and get cited answers grounded in peer-reviewed literature, including content from the New England Journal of Medicine and the JAMA Network.
“When evaluating new technologies for our clinical teams, our top priority is that they address real clinical needs and it has the ability to be scaled effectively across the health system,” said James Adams, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Northwestern Medicine. “By making OpenEvidence available directly in the EHR, we’re giving clinicians a single, trusted source for evidence-based answers at the point of care. This collaboration reduces friction in clinical decision-making and allows our teams to stay focused on what matters most - caring for patients.”
“Northwestern Medicine is one of the great academic health systems in the country, and its decision to extend OpenEvidence to the entire care team reflects where modern hospitals are headed,” said Vivien Ho, Senior Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at OpenEvidence. “Northwestern Medicine’s collaborative approach made this deployment possible. We’re looking forward to collaborating with Northwestern to continue to build best-in-class clinical workflows for clinicians across care teams.”
