Northwestern Medicine Valley West Manager Honored with Patriotic Employer Award

Northwestern Medicine Valley West Hospital manager Ashley Brown, BSN, RN, is the recipient of the Patriotic Employer Award*. The honor, presented by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, recognizes employers who support the National Guard and Reserve Force.

Brown, who is manager of patient care, medical/surgical and intensive care unit (ICU), was nominated by staff nurse and National Guard member Ronald McCaslin, RN. During a ceremony at Valley West Hospital on Nov. 5, leaders and staff applauded as McCaslin presented Brown with the Patriotic Employer Award pin.

“This service member has been gone sporadically throughout the past year supporting the Marine Corps mission, war fighting readiness, and for COVID-19 support. My manager has been nothing short of accommodating and supportive to me,” McCaslin wrote in the nomination letter. “Despite missing several days on orders, she has regularly checked in with me and made sure that my family and I were taken care of. She is 100% committed to supporting the U.S. military and its service members.”

Mike Holub, vice chair of the Illinois committee of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) presented Brown with a certificate honoring her for “contributing to national security and protecting liberty and freedom by supporting employees participating in America’s National Guard and Reserve Force.”

Brown has a unique understanding of the conflicts that service members face as her husband was a Marine.

“Northwestern Medicine Valley West Hospital deeply respects the commitment and sacrifice of all of our military service members, including our Guard and Reserve employees. We have many employees like Ron McCaslin that have served or have family members that are military veterans, so we understand the importance of providing support through flexible scheduling when our Guard and Reservist employees are training or are deployed,” said Beth Mosher, director of patient care services at Northwestern Medicine Valley West Hospital. “It’s an honor to work alongside of them and we thank them for their service.”
