Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital Announces New High-Risk Breast Cancer Clinic

LAKE FORESTOctober 19, 2017Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital will be opening a new high-risk breast clinic to better serve the needs of the community. The clinic is scheduled to open on November 5, 2017 and will be located at 660 North Westmoreland Road until March, when it will move to 1000 North Westmoreland Road.

The clinic will offer comprehensive risk evaluations, prevention and surveillance counseling, clinical breast exams, access to clinical trials if and when appropriate, a full range of breast imaging, as well as genetic counseling and testing, nutritional counseling, risk reduction and medications for risk reduction, surgical consultation, ovarian cancer surveillance and prophylactic surgery. To further assist patients, a social worker and nurse navigators will also be on staff.

“We are looking forward to offer this specialized care for those at risk for breast cancer in our new, state-of-the-art facility, and serve as a resource for patients who have a concern about their risk for breast cancer,” said Denise Monahan, MD, director, High Risk-Breast Cancer Program at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital. “We are proud to offer this program to our patients and to work with them closely to implement strategies for earlier detection and decreasing overall risk. Our specialists share the Northwestern Medicine commitment to provide excellent, advanced care that is informed by the latest research and clinical developments.”

During a patient’s visit, a risk assessment will begin with a review of medical history, family history and a clinical breast exam. A specially-trained breast health specialist will use that information and risk assessment tools to estimate the risk for development of breast cancer and to suggest a personalized screening program. The specialist may also recommend other services such as breast imaging, genetic counseling or surgery.
