Northwestern Medicine Opens New Outpatient Behavioral Health Center in Wheaton
Northwestern Medicine is expanding access to outpatient behavioral health services with the opening of a new office in Wheaton, Illinois. Adolescent and adult programs are now available at 7 Blanchard Circle near Wheaton’s Danada Square. The expansion brings partial hospital outpatient programming to the same building that houses Northwestern Medicine Immediate Care and medical offices.
“While our expansion plans have been underway for some time, opening during the pandemic allows us to respond to the increased need for in-person, safe, physically distanced mental health care,” said Kevin Poorten, senior vice president, Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, and president of Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital.
A report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention* found that more than 40-percent of U.S. adults reported struggling with mental health or substance abuse during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study found the prevalence of symptoms of anxiety disorder was approximately three times those reported during the same time period in 2019 and prevalence of depressive disorder was approximately four times that reported in the second quarter of 2019.
Services at the new Wheaton office include in-person group and individual therapeutic support for a full spectrum of mental health disorders including anxiety, depression, mood disorders, trauma-related disorders and life transition crises. A multidisciplinary team provides education, individual therapy and guidance. Group therapy is helpful in re-assuring patients they are not alone in their thoughts, feelings and circumstances.
“Humans need the company and comfort of each other,” said Allison Johnsen, LCPC, BCC, program development manager of behavioral health at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital and Delnor Hospital. “The need for safe, quality treatment is more important than ever as the isolation and anxiety, brought on by COVID-19, continues to take a toll on the population’s mental health.”
In addition to opening the new physical location, Northwestern Medicine expanded telehealth treatment and hybrid options in response to the pandemic. Inpatient units at Central DuPage Hospital were converted to private rooms, with infection prevention precautions in place. Temperature and symptom scanners, hourly sanitization, masking and COVID-19 testing for inpatients have become the “new normal”.
Northwestern Medicine Behavioral Health at Central DuPage Hospital offers comprehensive assessment and treatment options for individuals and families struggling with emotional, psychiatric health conditions and/or addiction and substance abuse. Both inpatient and outpatient treatment is available for adults, ages 18 and over, as well as adolescents (ages 13-18 years old).
