Midwest Orthopaedic Institute Joins Northwestern Medicine

Midwest Orthopaedic Institute (MOI) is now part of Northwestern Medicine, effective October 1, 2020. The Sycamore-based medical practice offers orthopaedic services, rheumatology, sports medicine, and rehabilitation therapy at three offices in Sycamore and Sandwich.

The addition of MOI will expand Northwestern Medicine’s mission to provide the most advanced orthopaedic care to a growing number of patients in the DeKalb region, closer to where they live and work. 11 physicians and approximately 80 staff members will now be employed by Northwestern Medicine and Northwestern Medicine will own and operate MOI’s diagnostic and rehabilitation services.

“Midwest Orthopaedic Institute has built a legacy of orthopaedic innovation and medical excellence in DeKalb and the surrounding communities,” said Kevin Poorten, Senior Vice President, Northwestern Memorial HealthCare. “The surgeons, clinicians and staff have long been our colleagues and friends. Now we call them family.”

Northwestern Medicine and MOI have a history of cooperation. MOI physicians are members of the Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital and Valley West Hospital medical staffs and surgeries are performed at both hospitals and the Midland Surgery Center, which Northwestern Medicine will now become the sole owner of.

“Northwestern Medicine shares our values of excellence and putting patients first, and this alliance will afford our patients access to more sophisticated, state-of-the-art diagnostics and treatment,” said Steven G. Glasgow, M.D., orthopaedic surgeon “We are excited about the opportunity to work with some of the greatest leaders in orthopedics.”

MOI was established in 1972 by Dr. Stan Brandon, one of the first orthopaedic physicians in DeKalb County. Since then, MOI has continued to recruit world-class orthopaedic specialists who have completed fellowships in sub-specialties, placing them at the highest levels of their profession. The practice has expanded to include sophisticated diagnostic equipment and a full team of rehabilitation specialists including physical therapists, certified athletic trainers, occupational therapists and massage therapists.

“The skilled surgeons from Midwest Orthopaedic Institute have been practicing within the walls of Kishwaukee and Valley West Hospitals for nearly 50 years and we are proud to have them join Northwestern Medicine,” said Jay Anderson, President, Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital and Valley West Hospital. “Our patients will benefit from the collective experience of this outstanding team of clinicians.”

Anchored by the #1 hospital in Illinois, Northwestern Medicine is the shared strategic vision of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare (NMHC) and Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine to transform the future of healthcare.
